Pilates can help those suffering from fibromyalgia reconnect with their mind and body by focusing on breath and simple, gentle movements. This chronic pain illness is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal aches, pain and stiffness, soft tissue tenderness, and general fatigue. Symptoms also include headaches, irritable bowels, painful menstrual disturbances, temperature sensitivity, numbness and tingling, anxiety, and cognitive and memory problems.
Fibromyalgia symptoms vary daily, so this client will usually do better in private sessions where the instructor can be responsive to what the client is feeling at that moment. Due to the variability of symptoms and energy level during the Pilates session, the instructor will carefully monitor the client for physical and emotional feedback, modifying all exercises for the appropriate response. We will encourage moderate strength and stretching exercises, abdominal and shoulder girdle stabilization, pain relief, and stress release. A daily Pilates home practice is usually suggested.
Most of our clients with fibromyalgia have reported that Pilates not only increases their strength and stability but also gives them more energy, a positive mental outlook, and mobility for other activities during their day.
