Pilates for Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is inflammation of a joint and is most likely to occur in highly mobile areas like fingers, elbows, and knees. However, arthritis is not uncommon in backs, hips, shoulders, and necks. The pain and stiffness of arthritis can make it difficult to perform even the simplest movements, and tends to worsen as the day goes on or with overuse. Rheumatoid arthritis, as well as many other of the 100 conditions categorized as arthritis, can exhibit flu-like or other symptoms throughout the body.
Pilates exercise can help lubricate joints, strengthen surrounding muscles and bones, and improve flexibility and proper movement of the affected joint. This results in less pressure on the joints, which in turn reduces wear-and-tear and pain.
Our instructors are trained to work with clients with various types of arthritis including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. We emphasize working at a time of day that feels best for you, and pain-free movements at a controlled pace. Pilates equipment is especially helpful to achieve these goals. We also follow guidelines of the Arthritis Foundation for safe, effective, and comfortable exercise choices.
