Osteoporosis is often known as “The Silent Disease.” It is the gradual loss of bone mass and is NOT related to age. Osteoporosis and osteopenia (low bone mineral density, sometimes a precursor of osteoporosis) affects women and men of all ages. Osteoporosis increases the risk of painful and sometime life-threating fractures that can occur anywhere in the body particularly the wrist, ribs, thoracic spine, and hips. Osteoporosis is insidious and often its first symptom is fracture. American Bone Health states that 1 out of 2 women in America is affected by osteoporosis.
Springs Pilates Pleasanton proudly offers the only dedicated, Pilates for Osteoporosis classes in the Tri-Valley area. We hosted the American Bone Health “Bone Safe Pilates” education and exercise event in 2012, and feature osteoporosis exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle guides in our studio lobby.
Katherine is particularly interested in working with clients with osteoporosis to prevent fractures. Both instructors have studied with Sherri Betz, PT and Certified Pilates Instructor. Sherri is an internationally recognized expert on Pilates for Osteoporosis.
Our Pilates for Osteoporosis classes or private sessions ensure that all exercises and transitions are safe, and we will help educate you on daily lifestyle and nutrition changes you can make to reduce your fracture risk. A general Pilates mat or equipment class is not recommended for clients with osteoporosis. Pilates, modified appropriately, can help increase bone mass and strengthen the muscles around the spine and bones for better support. Pilates will improve your balance to help avoid falls. Pilates will strengthen your core muscles for support in all of your daily activities.
