Pilates is a low stress method of physical and mental conditioning that strengthens and lengthens the muscles while stabilizing and supporting the skeleton. Joseph Pilates designed more than 600 specific exercises using the mat and specially designed equipment with the goal of developing the body uniformly. Pilates works directly with the deepest muscles in the body. Instead of performing many repetitions of an exercise, Pilates uses more precise movements requiring proper breath, form, focus, and control. Modern exercise science has analyzed The Pilates Method; we now know that using the breath properly and focusing on the smaller and often neglected postural and support muscles will lead to stronger and more efficient physical and mental responses in the body and mind.
